BURGOS 2011, PART ONE - MIGUELON

For Burgos, Spain, Roger Designed a large puppet to help publicize the workshops and draw the crowds. For this he chose a very famous character called “Miguelon”, a 500-thousand year old the skull found in an archaeological site close to the city of Burgos.

To represent the cultural exchange taking place between Spain and Turkey, Roger built a small version of “Pamuk” the Istanbul cat who accompanied Miguelon on his trailer to all of the workshops.

Summary:
Early last year Airan Berg was approached by the team in the City of Burgos in Spain, who were bidding for the Cultural Capital of Europe 2016, to bring our creature workshops to the city for the Festival of the White Nights.

Due to time constraints Airan approached Aydin Silier from the IKedi project to see if we could use the creatures that Roger had designed for Istanbul. He kindly agreed to get involved bringing the materials and manpower from Turkey needed to achieve this project.

Roger Designed a new large puppet to help publicize the workshops and draw the crowds. For this he chose a very famous character called “Miguelon”, a 500-thousand year old skull found in an archaeological site close to the city of Burgos.

To represent the cultural exchange taking place between Spain and Turkey, Roger built a small version of “Pamuk” the Istanbul cat who accompanied Miguelon on his trailer to all of the workshops.

Roger and M!a van Zyl flew in from South Africa where they met Airan and the Turkish crew and set about preparing parts, teaching students and building Miguelon.

The people of Burgos took to this project in a big way and we arrived at the workshop venues to find queues of people of all ages waiting for a chance to take part. By the end of the 30 days spent in Burgos we had about 4000 creatures.

We had perfect weather on the evening of the parade and the puppet builders did not let us down, they arrived en force with their puppets and we had a mile long sea of puppets snaking along the route through the city.
